Congratulations to the all the winners and nominees of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Annual Spirit Awards!
The Spirit Awards highlight enterprises in our city that are making remarkable achievements, and it was no surprise that several members of Assiniboine Credit Union were recognized for their impact in our city.
On Friday, March 13, 2015, the following Assiniboine member organizations received this significant honour:
Local Investment Toward Employment (LITE) — a public foundation that raises money from generous Winnipeggers and spends it in ways that promote jobs and long-term development in the community. LITE directs donations to support jobs, and more importantly, to help people who want to overcome the challenges they face.
Immigrant Centre Manitoba — a charity that delivers quality, innovative Immigration and Settlement Services to allow immigrants to connect, integrate, and fully participate in Canadian society. For 65 years, they have provided not only high quality practical support for newcomers in their transition period, but also the emotional caring and concern that is so vital.
Manitoba Green Retrofit — a social enterprise delivering energy efficiency retrofits, residential renovations, and services for vulnerable persons who cannot prepare their home for bed bug treatments while employing people who face barriers in the labour market.
Diversity Food Services — a social enterprise that has significantly improved the quality of food for students at the University of Winnipeg, created many good quality jobs for people with barriers to employment, and supported local and sustainable food producers by shifting their purchasing to these suppliers.
Resource Assistance for Youth (RaY) — RaY is a nationally recognized youth-centered organization offering integrated services for homeless and marginalized youth in Winnipeg. This charity created forRaY Second Chance Shoppe, a social enterprise, to create jobs for the youth they serve.
Assiniboine Credit Union was the sponsor for the newly created Social Enterprise Award, which we had the honour of presenting to one of ACU’s members — Diversity Foods! This new award recognizes those social enterprises that are creating jobs and training opportunities for people in our communities that are dealing with various barriers to employment. Like Assiniboine Credit Union, they are driven by values in using business models to improve the quality of life for people in our communities.
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, and thank-you for everything that you do to make Winnipeg a better place to live and work.
