Theatre by the River is an independent, professional theatre company based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since 2005, we’ve existed to produce theatrical work throughout Manitoba that attracts and excites both traditional and non-traditional theatre audiences by providing artistically provocative, socially significant and financially accessible theatre. Mel Marginet serves as our Artistic Director; and our current company includes Derek Leenhouts, Rod Beilfuss, Kevin Anderson, with our member-at-large Brent Hirose. Our board of directors include Gio Navarro, Tim Breen, Laina Hughes, and Bryce Pfrimmer.
At nine-years-young, Theatre by the River has been named one of Winnipeg’s “best independent companies” by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation and produced an assortment of 15 productions, such as:
- classics like Oedipus Rex — set in Augustine United Church with Oedipus as an Evangelical preacher.
- contemporary gems such as Generous by Canadian Michael Healey — a searing response to the cut-throat nature of big-business and politics.
- Duncan McMillan’s Lungs — named the Best Drama of the 2012 Winnipeg International Fringe Festival.
Most recently, Theatre by the River brought The Cherry Orchard to the Winnipeg Master Playwright Festival with a stunning promenade performance. Co-produced with Little Echo Theatre, the production was an audience favourite, boasting a completely sold-out run.
With the changing nature of arts funding and support, Theatre by the River has had to be creative with their productions. Thanks to community partners like Assiniboine Credit Union, the company is able to bring productions to the stage and to pay professional artists for their work. As a continued sponsor and through their Sustainable Community Grants program, Assiniboine demonstrates commitment and support to the local art community. We look forward to another decade producing artistically provocative, socially significant and financially accessible productions for Winnipeg audiences.
