Construction of Old Grace Housing Co-operative is now under way in Winnipeg’s Wolseley neighbourhood. The 60-suite building will include 30 apartments earmarked for low- and moderate-income households. Assiniboine Credit Union (ACU) is playing a central role in getting this new housing co-operative off the ground.
The Old Grace Housing Co-operative (OGHC) will be located at the site of the now-demolished Old Grace Hospital and will be ready for occupancy in early 2018.
With ACU as its financial partner, Old Grace Housing Co-operative is now under construction. ACU’s Community Account Manager, Bill Dinsdale said, “We are proud to be working with the Old Grace. Its commitment to co-operation, sustainability, and affordability fits with our values.”
Co-op President Sandra Hardy said that co-op housing represents another attractive option for people who might be considering purchasing a condo or life-lease. Co-operatives are affordable and have the added advantage of full member involvement in the decision-making. Hardy said the demand for suites has been high, with only a few remaining unfilled.
The environmentally sustainable building reflects the character of the surrounding neighbourhood and includes attractive common areas and amenities, landscaping and outdoor areas. Wolseley residents and community organizations have provided substantial input into the development of the building design, and many have provided supporting letters and comments at various stages of the project’s development. Hardy said “We are really encouraged by the community support we have received.”
All suites will be visitable by people who use wheelchairs or walkers, and six fully accessible suites are planned. The parking, service and common areas and exterior landscape are all designed to be fully accessible.
The co-op is located near numerous bus routes and offers residents easy access to many neighbourhood services and amenities. Peg City Car Co-op will manage two car-share locations on site, expanding their network into the Wolseley community. Secure bicycle parking and storage will also be provided.
