LITE (Local Investment Toward Employment) is holding their 20th annual Alternative Christmas Hamper campaign, and Assiniboine is partnering with them once again, taking donations in our branches.
LITE began as a response to a dramatic decline in sales at an inner-city co-operative grocery store at Christmas time. Nobody would deny local families the welcome gift of a food hamper, but the result was that a business supporting long-term solutions to poverty was nearly forced to close due to lack of sales during their busiest season. Christmas LITE was formed to direct hamper donations to purchase products from inner-city businesses and social enterprises before sending them to the Christmas Cheer Board.
Here’s how it works:
Since its inception in 1994, they have purchased and distributed over $700,000 worth of food products from inner-city businesses. Last year alone, they purchased $34,000. As a gift that gives twice, that’s a lot of giving.
