Farewell and Thanks to Al Morin

Farwell Al MorinAs many of our readers know, Al Morin has announced his retirement from Assiniboine Credit Union after serving as President and CEO since 1997. He will be leaving Assiniboine at the end of 2013.

You may not know, however, that Al has been a loyal contributor to the credit union and co-operative systems for 40 years. His contributions to Assiniboine and the credit union system are many and he was recently named the 2013 winner of the Credit Union Central of Manitoba Order of Merit for lifetime achievement.

The list of Al’s achievements at ACU is long, but here are a few noteworthy ones:

  • The mergers of Astra, Vantis, Buffalo & Assiniboine in 2007/2008 that resulted in our credit union growing from $1 billion to $2 billion in assets and propelling us from 22nd largest credit union in Canada to today’s status as 8th largest.
  • The opening of two inner-city branches in areas that had been abandoned by banks over the years: West Broadway and Winnipeg’s North End.
  • Al led the transition of ACU into a values-based financial institution in which ACU committed to triple bottom line accountability: financial, social and environmental. This vision ultimately led to an invitation to join the Global Alliance for Banking on Values.

Al enjoying video tributeIn the next six weeks many of us will have farewell visits and reminisce with Al. I had the privilege of thanking Al on behalf of the Board of Directors at his recent retirement party. Among other things, I said:

“We acknowledge that it takes a lot of passion, skill, and dedication to leading a large complex organization and you have been a role model for others to follow. It’s never been about “Al”; it’s always about protecting and strengthening ACU, and thinking about employees and their families, the communities we serve, our strategic partners – in fact the full range of stakeholders. You’ve been visionary and strategic, and your unique personal brand always features high integrity, immense compassion and caring, and warmth and friendship toward all.

We are grateful for the legacy you leave Al. Thank you for building Assinboine into a major organization that’s so committed to using financial services for good.

Warm wishes to you and your family for health and happiness in the years ahead.”

We’ve posted some photos of Al’s retirement party, enjoy.
