Clara Hughes is one of Winnipeg’s most famous athletes. You may know that this amazing six-time Olympic cycling and speed-skating medalist is the only Canadian to have won medals in both the summer and winter Olympics. But did you know that she has also battled depression?
To raise awareness and action in mental health and help end the stigma around mental illness, Hughes kicked off “Clara’s Big Ride” in Toronto in March. On her national bicycle tour through every province and territory she will invite people in communities large and small into the mental health conversation and share her own story of mental health challenges.
Cycling an average 150 kilometres each day, Clara’s 110 day, 12,000 km journey will end on Canada Day in Ottawa.
Clara comes home to Winnipeg on June 14 for two special events hosted by The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Winnipeg Region:
The carnival takes place at Clara Hughes Recreation Park, 281 Henderson Highway, where Clara will be first welcomed home. She is expected to arrive between 2:30-3:30 pm.
Manitoba’s Big Social for Clara’s Big Ride
Clara’s ride will take place at the Manitoba Museum June 14 from 7pm-12am. Clara will take the stage and greet the crowd at 8pm along with emcee Ace Burpee of 103.1 Virgin Radio.
