With interest in biking burgeoning, organizers of Bike to Work Day decided 2014 was the year to expand the annual one day celebration of commuter cycling to a full blown week-long festival of bikes and biking. From June 16 to 22 Bike Week Winnipeg is presenting cycling events for casual, commuter and competitive cyclists.
Bike Week Winnipeg activities, including 7th annual Bike to Work Day on June 20, emphasize the social and community aspects of bike riding.
Bikes are Booming
Cycling has undergone an amazing renaissance in Winnipeg. BikeWinnipeg estimates that commuter cycling has increased in the city by 28% since 2008! New cycling infrastructure, higher gas prices and an increasing awareness of the physical and environmental benefits of cycling have driven this two wheeled transportation transition.
Just as cycling has grown in the city, so has the enthusiastic support from sponsors and partners for creating a larger, multi-day cycling event that promotes “cycling for everyone”.
That event is Bike Week Winnipeg and over its’ seven days cyclists can experience activities as wide ranging as a pancake breakfast at ice level in the MTS Centre; a Hot Cycle: Spin Class at Millennium Library Park; an art tour through Point Douglas; or, a moveable feast that tours past iconic downtown architecture and visits five great restaurants. I can’t wait to ride into the MTS Centre for the pancake breakfast!
The entire seven days of activities can be found on the Bike Week Winnipeg event schedule. There really is something for everyone to try during Bike Week Winnipeg. Take in a group ride, a race or a barbeque party. Bike to Birds Hill Park and back; build your bike repair savvy; or, bring you best bike plans to a Bicycle Friendly workshop.
