In recognition of our “leadership among financial institutions in environmental business practices and commitment to sustainability” the Manitoba Eco-Network recently awarded Assiniboine Credit Union the 2014 Anne Lindsey Protecting Our Earth Award (or “Earthie” award).
Over the past four years Assiniboine’s environmental sustainability has become increasingly integrated across the credit union. Personally, supporting this effort has been highly rewarding and I think my co-workers and our members appreciate the positive impacts our “triple bottom line” approach has had at work and in our community. Our leadership in this space has garnered us recognition both nationally and locally, and receiving this award was truly an honour for Assiniboine.
Inspiring People, Celebrating Nature
For the 23rd year, Manitoba Eco-Network present the awards at their Reel Green “Inspiring People, Celebrating Nature” Annual Celebration and Fundraising Event on February 1, 2014. The event was impeccably emceed by 103 Virgin Radio host Ace Burpee who, aside from doing a great job as auctioneer and host, also gave kudos to Main Branch Financial Advisor, Sara Kushnir, for all the support she’s provided to a business he’s involved in.
The room was filled with many familiar faces from Manitoba’s environmental community. Among them was my good friend Getty Stuart, the founder of Fruit Share, the other organization nominated in the same award category as Assiniboine. After some good-natured trash talking, Getty and I waited expectantly to find out which of our organizations would receive the award. In the end ACU’s name was called and I found myself stepping on stage to accept the “Earthie” on behalf of everyone at ACU.
While accepting the award it occurred to me that many of the people and the organizations in the room were ACU members and a big part of the reason ACU is so committed to community and environmental sustainability. Their efforts have long inspired Manitobans to put people and planet first. Spending the evening with so many amazing people was very humbling and in many ways this award is as much theirs as it is Assiniboine Credit Union’s.
